Modems are used to either connect to the Internet through a phone line or send or receive fax documents through a phone line. Most computers come with a modem. Most modems are 56K V.90 modems, which indicate the speed of the modem. 56K is the maximum speed you can achieve with a so-called dial-up modem. To get more speed for Internet usage, you will have to go to DSL or Cable modem connections.
When buying a modem for your PC, you should first recognise what your PC's primary function is. For example; if you use your PC mainly as a word processor and don't surf the Internet that regularly, maybe you just use it for receiving and sending e-mails, you won't need to fork out a lot of cash for a modem.
You can settle for something slightly slower and cheaper. However, if you own a business and you rely heavily on the Internet then we recommend that you purchase a slightly more expensive and faster modem for a quicker connection to the Internet.
