Advice when buying a receiver
The receiver is the heart of your system. Your receiver amplifies all the sound, decodes surround sound, receives radio broadcasts, and acts as the control center for your system. Receivers rarely break down or lose their capabilities over time. You should always take into account your present and future needs when choosing a receiver. 3. Check how many inputs and outputs your receiver has. Greater number of inputs and outputs increase switching capability.

There are two type of receivers. Surround receiver and Stereo receiver. A Stereo receiver is a conventional two-channel receiver that may be used to play music recorded in two channels, such as CDs, LP records, and audiocassettes in stereo. On the other hand Surround receiver is capable of processing up to six channels of sound. Besides accommodating traditional two-channel sources, surround receivers can deliver the multiple-channel sound necessary for a home theater sound system
It is an electrical property. A low impedance draws a high current flow from the source, while a high impedance draws a little. This means that speakers with a low impedance are more difficult for an amplifier to drive. Lower impedance is in the range of 6-8 ohms.
Receivers often do not operate well into low impedance loads. If you will use a receiver with your speakers, look for speakers with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms or higher.
It is good to know the number of inputs and outputs your receiver has. Greater number of inputs and outputs increase switching capability and you can connect you receiver to subwoofers and other speakers easily
