Energy Saving tips

Even if you are just browsing right now, there are many other things you can do to save energy, money and help prevent climate change. Why not think about some of the following ways to save energy...

  • Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the element if you're using an electric kettle).
  • Turn your thermostat downTurn your thermostat down by 1ºC. Reducing your room temperature by 1ºC could cut your heating bills by up to 10% and save you around £40 per year.
  • Don’t leave appliances, such as TVs, stereos and DVD players, on standby and remember not to leave appliances like mobile phones or laptops on charge unnecessarily.
  • Install cavity wall insulation. A third of the heat lost in an uninsulated home is through the walls. Cavity wall insulation is easy to have fitted and could save you around £90 per year on your heating bills.
  • Top up your loft insulation to 270mm (approximately 10.5 inches). Loft insulation is so straight forward that you can even install it yourself. Insulating your loft is not expensive and a standard 270mm layer could save as much as £110 a year on fuel bills.
  • Turn your thermostat downIf your boiler is over 15 years old, it’s probably time to replace it. By law, new boilers must now be of the high-efficiency condensing type. They can help you save up to a third on your heating bills and even more if you upgrade to modern controls.
  • Wash your clothes at 30ºC. Washing at 30ºC instead of higher temperatures means you use around 40% less electricity.
