Hotpoint RLFM171P White

An inexpensive, nicely designed model that performs the basics admirably.

The Hotpoint RLFM171P is a reasonably-priced and basic freestanding fridge. What it lacks in eye-catching functions it more than makes up for with some great design features and its awesome chilling capability. UK buyers should put this one on the watch list.

This tall model from Hotpoint has measurements of 175 cm (H) x 60 cm (W) x 65 cm (D). Inside there’s a fairly substantial 342 litres, making this ideal for a medium to large-sized family. There are four height-adjustable shelves made of safety glass, and a clever hanging wine rack for the wine connoisseurs out there. You also get two small salad crispers for your fresh fruit and vegetables and five full-length racks on the inside of the door – one of which is adjustable – as well as a large egg tray. Rubber padding stops bottles jangling as you open the fridge and there’s a handy interior light for the night-time snackers amongst you. It’s lacking a couple of neat features such as an open door alert but it does have an auto-defrost to prevent any build-up of ice.

It has been pointed out by some that the thermostat claims your temperatures are lower than they really are, so it’s advised you buy a thermometer when you first set it up. You’ll also find temperatures are quite uneven across the shelves.

This fridge is great for chilling your food quickly, and once it gets the food temperature down it’s highly effective at keeping it there – even in a heatwave. In fact it will safely operate between 10 and 43oC. The RLFM171P is also extremely efficient; with its energy rating of A + you shouldn’t see bills topping £20 a year. Last point of note is that it will produce 43 decibels of noise - just below average.

What’s hot:

  • Pretty cheap to buy and very cheap to run
  • Cools effectively (but a bit unevenly)
  • Great interior design

What’s not:

  • Dodgy thermostat
  • Uneven temperatures across shelves
  • Not exactly brimming with features

Why you should buy it:

The Hotpoint RLFM171P is a great basic fridge at a great price. It’s not an all singing, all dancing model, but it’s a solid workhorse and will perform the basics with some distinction.
