Which similar products have you used?

original grey playstation, ps1 and the original ps2.

Summary

well i had the original ps2 (the big black one) for 2years. but because it is now so poor at reading, it can only read damaged games. it is the same story with this one. it is 2years old and yet again i have started haveing reading problems. you clean the lense with a dry c.d. or dvd cleaner. but you will only get about 6mounths bofore cleaning the lense dosen't make any difrence.
memory cards are quite expensive.
the dvd player is infact quite poor to my sony dvd player which is 6 years old.
on the plus side it has alot more games than xbox. and better ones as well. like grand theft auto which always came out 6months bofor xbox. but then again it has games that are only on xbox like forza motorsport.
there are some sound problems on the ps2 version of NFSU2.

i do not reccomend this product as the ps3 is out.

What are the weaknesses?: compared to the x-box:
there is no cd burner, no built in memory, there are slightly poorer graphics and sound quality on the same games as the xbox

New PS2 Slimline

Which similar products have you used?

I bought my son the new slimline PS2 complete with 6 games from comet for £129.99, the cheapest ive seen anywhere.

Why, Sony, why?

Nintendo 64

Summary

Don't get the PS2. You're better of with a GameCube, hell, even an XBox.

What are the strengths?: Sleek case design.

What are the weaknesses?: First off, don't expect quality from Sony.

I along with thousands of other people have had problems with the PS2's laser pickup withing months if not weeks of buying the PS2.

The software for the most part is crap. The only reason there are a few good games is because you have to hit the mark once in awhile when you're flooding the market with complete BS.
Just look at Vice City. This game is ridden with almost as many bugs as the average PC game, but it's a console game. Way to go, Sony! Breaking down the console barrier!

Also, the PS2 claims DVD playback but at least the first batch had severe issues. The contrast would fade in and out as if you were trying to watch a Macrovision-protected DVD on a normal DVD player through your VCR.
Also, the PS2 DOES NOT PLAY VCD OR SVCD. What the fück?! So it's not even a real DVD player, then.

And how long can Sony get away with charging $100 more for their system than the superior GameCube? Coem on, who do you people think you're f

Summary

Great console, by far the market leader, beats the opposition hands down (the fact it is more expensive than both its competitos yet still outsells both of them by 6 to 1 is proof itself). There has never been a better time to buy.

How long have you used the product?

More than 3 months

What are the strengths?: Getting cheaper all the time, now only £160 most places. The fact it plays dvds is cool, but not of great significance. The games are great, there are more of them, they come out earlier and are cheaper to buy than for the x-box and the gcube. It looks stylish (although how about a silver one to match modern equipment sony ?). The controller is perfect, logical, contoured and best of all small and light enough to hold for hours without getting sore (are you reading microsoft). the sharpness of the graphics can be greatly improved by chucking the scart that comes with it and replacing it with a high quality one.

What are the weaknesses?: DVD playback is average at best, so its fine to watch dvds on if you cant afford a dedicated player, but the quality you get will be nothing like as good as a 200 quid dvd. The quality of the overall unit is suspect (the laser unit packed in on mine after about 18 months, meaning a complete overhaul at almost 100 quid was on the cards - i ended up replacing it with a ps2+game for £160 deal), so buy a year extension to your 1yr standard warranty.
