Title of review Doesn't work properly
What are the strengths? Reasonable picture quality.
What are the weaknesses? Clunky interface.

Locks up frequently, requiring unplugging to reset - and this doesn't always work

Fails to record programs

Rewinding - and attempting to skip adverts - during playback often jumps to beginning of program.

Uses Linux operating system, but violates license conditions - SOFTWARE PIRACY

High power consumption while idle - the fan and hard drive NEVER stop running

Noisy fan - it's fairly quiet, but intrusive and sometimes kicks into a higher speed mode during/after playbacks which is significantly louder.
Summary This machine mosty works, BUT it's also fairly unreliable, as will be noted in other forums.

Initially it seems ok, but as time goes on and more programs are recorded, it seems to become less and less reliable.

One of the most annoying "features" is that attempting to skip adverts, or wind backwards while watching often leads to jumps back to the beginning of the recording. Perhaps this is TopUp TVs way of ensuring people watch the adverts.

TopUpTV have been aware of these drawbacks for quite a while, yet in the last 2 years several new features have been introduced while failing to address these very basic operation flaws.

The interfaces are clunky, fan noise intrusive in a quiet room and power consumption higher than it should be because it apparently doesn't actually "sleep" - powering off at the wall is NOT viable, because this interferes with program recording AND schedule gathering.

Finally there's the issue of Thomson's apparent software piracy. The internals of this machine are based on the Linux operating system and there is no attempt to comply with licensing conditions.

All in all, this machine is best avoided, even if sold on special for 80 pounds as is seen from time to time.

What are the strengths? So easy to record
Massive memory
Excellent EPG
Very user friendly
What are the weaknesses? Occasionally "freezes". Analogue picture goes hazy when you have to switch off to restart after freezing.
Quite a few initial faults but all now cured
Summary We are so pleased that we are buying one for christmas for a family member
